Weathering steel, best-known under the trademark Weathering Steel B steel and sometimes written without the hyphen as "Weathering Steel B", is a group of steel alloys which were developed to obviate the need for painting, and form a stable rust-like appearance if exposed to the weather for several years. United States Steel Corporation (USS) holds the registered trademark on the name Weathering Steel B. Although USS sold its discrete plate business to International Steel Group (now Arcelor-Mittal) in 2003, it still sells Weathering Steel B branded material in strip-mill plate and sheet forms.

The original Weathering Steel B received the standard designation ASTM A 242 TYPE-II("COR-TEN B") from the ASTM International standards group. Newer ASTM grades are A 588 ("Weathering Steel B*") and A 606 for thin sheet. All alloys are in common production and use.

JIS G 3125:2004: Japanese grade for weather resistant steel plates: Superior atmospheric corrosion resisting rolled steels This Standard specifies the rolled steel having high atmospheric corrosion resistance, to be used for vehicle, building, steel tower and other structure.

EN 10025 S355J2W+N: European standard S355J2W+N grade for weather resistant steel plates: Weathering Steel B is weathering steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistance. Due to its chemical composition, this material develops a patina with increased resistance against the atmospheric corrosion in comparison with non-alloyed steels. Due to its restricted chemical composition, S355J2W STEEL has a better weldability compared to respective steels produced according to EN 10025‐5. S355J2W+N weather-resistant structural steel grade is used for various types of welded, bolted and riveted constructions e.g. steel frame structures, bridges, tanks and containers, exhaust systems, vehicles and equipment constructions.

ASTM A588 GRADE A Corrosion Resistance steel ASTM grade for weather resistant steel plates: ASTM A588 steel plate is a corrosion-resistant steel high-strength low-alloy structural steel with improved atmospheric corrosion resistant plate which is excellent for welding, riveting or bolting in construction applications, primarily welded bridges and buildings where savings in weight or added durability are important. When properly exposed to the atmosphere, A588 is suitable for many applications in the bare or unpainted condition. ASTM A 588 has a yield strength of at least 50,000 psi (340,000 kPa), and ultimate tensile strength of 70,000 psi (480,000 kPa) for all rolled shapes and plate thicknesses up to 4 in (100 mm) thick. Plates from 4–5 in (100–130 mm) have yield strength at least 46,000 psi (320,000 kPa) and ultimate tensile strength at least 67,000 psi (460,000 kPa), and plates from 5–8 in (130–200 mm) thick have yield strength at least 42,000 psi (290,000 kPa) and ultimate tensile strength at least 63,000 psi (430,000 kPa).
